I know that this is going to sound crazy, but sometimes I look at my dog Cody, and I am amazed at his ability to remain attentive and unscathed. He has no short-term memory, and lives for the present moment. He has no interest or understanding of the future, and this makes him hyper-aware of what is going on in the world around him. Now, we as humans are different because we all have a past that is hard to let go of, and a future that we are basing our existences on. It is difficult to remain present, when we have emotional triggers of the past to draw us right back to where we started. It is important to understand that we are only in control of what we have in front of us…the present! This is where we have all the power in the word. We can not control our past, because it has already occurred, and the future is not guaranteed. For this reason, it is crucial to pay special attention to the world around you, and you will be surprised to see that you will take notice of all the beautiful details that you may have missed because of your own inner LOUD noise. Let me share some benefits with you for remaining in the NOW. Don’t worry if you have a hard time in the beginning, just slip back into the present whenever you catch yourself dwelling on the past, or fixating on the future. It takes time to master this.
Improve Your Overall Focus
You will experience the advancement of your senses. Just the simple action of listening to what is around you, will open your mind to things that you would have otherwise missed. Oh! And, you will be a better overall listener in a conversation, rather than just waiting for your turn to speak. You will also develop a way of really seeing people for who they are, because you will be able to see through them with all of the focused attention that you will be paying.
Time To Stop Overthinking Things
Now it is time to do, without overthinking or worrying about situations that you can not control. If all that you do is think and analyze situations all day long, nothing will ever get done, because you can not get out of the thinking stage. You will be in a perpetual rut! Being present will allow you to stop fixating on the negative aspects of the situation, and give you the motivation to take action. Remember, if you do not take action now, we do not know when the next opportunity may arise.
Curb That Anxiety
One of the best ways to curb anxiety is through deep breathing, and this is encouraged to most patients in my practice. When one focuses on their breaths, it forces the person to remain present. This can work as a great starting exercise in order to get to your own present space. You will start to feel very still, and from here you can work towards remaining present for longer periods of time. If you find yourself drifting into the past or future, then start focusing on those breaths again, and you will immediately feel the release of the stressors that are afflicting you.
No More Judging
No one likes anyone who lives for a moment to judge or crucify someone. As we live in our tainted worlds, our insecurities come out when we judge others and focus on other people’s flaws. We are all flawed, and being present will only lead to positive thoughts of others, because you will instinctively be more secure with yourself. You simply won’t have time to judge others, because it won’t matter! What would matter more is the world around you, and your view of the world will be much more clear, and will only lead to nothing but excitement.
Get Those Creative Juices Flowing
For those of us who are actors, writers, artists, or dancers, being present will mean the difference between good and great! When you take the thought out of things, everything just starts to flow. There is nothing worse than mental blocks, trust me, I’ve been there. You start thinking too much, and then start questioning everything that you are doing. Once you let everything go, things will just start to come to you, and that is where your best work can be,
Now, I am not saying to forget about your past and not work toward a future goal. I am saying that the past does not define our future, the present does…what you do right now does. There is little use for the past, and the future is not here. All you have is right now to make this world what you want of it! So, remain present in order to achieve all that you want and more of this beautiful life of yours.
